10 Dangerous Shark Beaches

Scared of sharks while lounging on the beach? I am. I recently found a very interesting list of the most dangerous, shark infested beaches in the world. So for the top ten dangerous shark beaches, beachgoers need not to look any further.

Kosi Bay, South Africa - Zambezi sharks like to hunt for their food in fresh water lakes and rivers, making no body of water in this region safe.
“Shark Alley,” Gansbaai, South Africa -This holiday destination a short distance from Cape Town is home to the most dense population of Great White Sharks in the entire world. So Gansbaai has rightfully earned the nickname Shark Alley.
Brisbane, Australia - Most Australian shark attacks on the eastern coast result in just injuries, while attacks in the southern Australian waters usually kill the victims. Watch out for sharks all over Australian Beaches, as there is no place totally safe from sharks.
Bolinas Beach, Northern California - Great white sharks feast in the waters of this beach just a short hop from San Francisco.
New Smyrna Beach, Florida - Dubbed as “shark capital of the world” just because of its tourism doesn’t mix well with the natural sharks around the beaches. The only Florida Beach on the list.
Umhlanga Rocks, KwaZulu Natal, South Africa - Swimming here is safe, as of now. Nets keeping out Great white sharks currently make it safe to swim, but the policy may be changed, making this a dangerous shark area.
North Shore, Oahu, Hawaii - The Second highest number of Hawaiian shark attacks occur on Oahu (you’ll see the leading Hawiian shark beach later). Galapagos sharks, sandbar sharks, tiger sharks love the waters here, so watch out.
Recife, Brazil - a nearby reef on the shores of Refice attracts enough sharks to make Recife the most dangerous shark beach in all of South America. That’s a lofty accomplishment considering how many beaches Brazil has.
Kahana, West Maui, Hawaii - Maui leads the Hawiian island chain in unprovoked shark attacks, thus making Kahana a dangerous shark beach
Grand Bahama Island, Bahamas - Although the island has only had four recorded unprovoked shark attacks, the gigantic population of tiger sharks in the water is enough to put Grand Bahama on the list.
But remember that sharks can attack you on pretty much any beach, so don’t think you’re safe if you’re not swimming at a beach listed above.
This list came from Forbes Traveler Shark infested beaches.

what about ct beaches and im asking this because i remember when they caught that BIG great white and got it out of the long island sound...?
atleast Forbes Traveler had the honesty to acknowledge that sharks are not the man/surfer eating machine you portray with your hyperbolic rhetoric. give us all, including these apex predators and magnificent creatures, a break and stop this hysterical, sensationalist "journalism" - set up to sell and play upon fears.
Thank you for the helpful tips. Now I know where not to take my kids swimming.
that is so nasty ya need 2 kill them sharks
In November 2006 I was on holiday in the Turks & Caicos Islands. My son and I went out on a dive boat. I decided to snorkel while everyone else was diving. As I moved along in the water I suddenly noticed a shark next to me. This was a six foot reef shark. I stayed completely still and the shark swam off. Everyone else thought it was a very cool experience. I was glad to be back on the boat.
Very informative and interesting. I guessed 3 out of 10. Thanks again.
first time clicker.
it is very good to know the 10 top shark infested beaches!! i would like to see the top 10 jellyfish infested beaches!!!!
its good to know what beaches are infested. i would never swim in shark alley but, i would love to stand right at the edge of the sand and let the water touch the tip of my feet. i have a huge facanation with sharks totally obsessed. thanks for the tip.
F-That!!! I'm not going to Frisco!
HEY ARE THERE ANY SHARKS GETTING LOSE IN MICHIGAN?
Thank you for the list on "10 Dangerous Shark Beaches"
Cool! Now I know where to take my portable shark cage...
I'm glad to see that a Northern California Beach is listed , I am planning a vacation / fishing trip to california next year , looks like I'm taking my big game rig and heading to bolinas beach , them jaws will look awesome on my mantle
I'd be interested in knowing how they define "infested" beaches. I think of infested like insects that are swarming around, not the occassional shark that MIGHT be spotted.
I've lived in Fl. for the past 4 yrs. and haven't swam in the waters of New Smyrna because of it's reputation as "the shark capital of the world". I don't swim in the rivers or lakes and ponds because of "gators". So there are few places to swim if you don't have a pool which is ironic considering the weather here.
I used to be young and foolish and would swim in the ocean way over my head and way out from the shore. I had a fellow tell me. "If you saw what comes out of that water you would never swim in it". I have remembered that and ...I don't !!! I have a healthy fear of things much bigger than me with teeth, and things that can hurt or kill you in general. The world is a wonsderful place but dangerous sometimes and it pays to be caustious and careful.
well why do u guys have to show that???? mybe people wont go a swimming any more they will get tooo freakin scared to come to the beach!!!!!
Better get your facts straight. Hawaii, with literally tens of thousands of tourists frolicking in its waters every single day of the year, is near the bottom of the heap in North America.
From the International Shark Attack File:
"Florida (23) had most of the unprovoked attacks in the United States. The 23 attacks were slightly higher than the 19 reported in 2005, but the average of 18 over the past three years (2004-2006) has been notably lower than the yearly mean of 33 from the first four years of the century (2000-2003). Additional U.S. attacks were recorded in South Carolina (4), Hawaii (3), Oregon (3), California (2), New Jersey (1), North Carolina (1), and Texas (1)."

WOW...I know lakes are looking better everyday.
oh wow!i went to 1 of those beaches!we saw one but it was a baby!(what is with all the exclamatory sentences?)
As my son says. Who wants to become part of the food chain. They have the water, and we have the sand. Seems like a good pact to us.
how many fadal attacks by lemon sharks and how many attack in texas
People must understand that while we are the top of the food chain on dry land for the most part; when we enter the water ways of the world and the great oceans and sea's of our home called Earth, we are nolonger at the top and even though we pride our selves as the most intellegent and fearless mamal on this plane we call exsistance, we had better think twice about being overly safe and confident that we are still at the top in H2O.
I'm a native Floridan and almost exclusively go to New Smyrna Beach and have most of my life. I have never seen a shark, not in my entire state even. I'm not saying they aren't there or that attacks don't happen, but no need to panic. As long as you educate yourself as to their reasons for attacking and don't do stupid things in the water that attract them, chances are you'll be fine. Sharks are attracted to fish (people fishing in shallow water), splashing and blood. If you had a bird's eye view of most beaches over the water, you'd never go in again. It's the ocean, sharks live in it, period.
This is definatly a help. I hate sharks. I mean I can handle little small ones..but ones like the great white..just make me so scared to even go up to my knees in water in the ocean...jellyfish infested beaches would be nice too..seeing as I almost got stung by one on the beach here in Washington
sharks r so important i think they r beautiful creachers that god gave us to enjoy. if you kill them you r acually killing yourself. they may pose a threat and you should be aware of these beaches but u cannot kill them. they r so important to our ecosystem. think twice befor trying to kill them.
awesome i love sharks there so awsome!!!! and like omg i love reading bout them anyway see ya!!!
Sharks may be scary and mean but are VERY important. They clean the ocean. How many of you like to eat something that used to live in the water. Well without sharks
Resorts need to fence off safe areas for their guests to swim in. The Hilton Hotel in Curacao had to do that. They simply made a corral of heavy fish netting that fell from wooden structures all the way to the bottom of the ocean, about 20 feet down, where we could swim without the fear of sharks attacking us. I've never seen the Tiger sharks on Grand Bahama but will watch out for them now that I hear they're there!
For a map of world shark attacks click here:

Sharks are my worst fear!!!!
Thanks for the tip!
Hi thanks for the info on sharks and i will stay away from those beaches that were mentioned
What about Top 10 Mud Shark beaches?
actually we're over fishing the oceans so killing off some sharks would be nice. Why else do you think we have "unprovoked shark attacks" in the first place?? They're not enough food because we're over-fishing not to mention the high amounts of mercury(poison) now found in wild fish is also an issue for humans. Mercury is due to us polluting the waters. So I'm all for hunting them once a year with a license such as deer and other game. It's to control the population. *grins*
As a surfer and a former special operations diver, I have traveled all over the world surfing and diving, and I can tell you right now that this is a worthless article!
Like Moszelle, I grew up surfing at the New Smyrna and Sebastian Inlets in Florida...and while the surf zone is littered with basking, bottom-feeding sharks (they are like carp)...I only saw one large shark of any concern in 10 years of surfing there. This big tiger followed a deep-water fishing boat into the channel while they were cleaning fish and dumping overboard...the shark completely ignored my brother and I...and we reported the boat to the C.G.
Yes there are big tigers that roam the Bahamas, but our combined Florida universities surf teams went there every year surfing, spearfishing and diving...dozens of us practically living in the water for weeks at a time...without even seeing a reef, tiger, bull, nurse or white.
I have surfed and dived all over the Hawaiian islands...and like Scorpio we know the big boys stay out in the channels where the calving (baby) whales are...and with the number of surfers, boogie boarders, sail boarders, divers, paddle-boarders, sailors and tourists in the water there...it is safer than driving at home!
The Bay area is loaded with whites simply because of the blood from the canneries, and the marine mammal protection act...which has been in effect for like 20 years now...guess how long it takes for a white to grow big enough to take a full sized bull seal...yup.
Even San Diego is home to big whites, and the occasional tiger, nurse or bull...but if you fly over the beaches you see tons of basking bottom-feeders in with swimmers...and those beaches are flooded with folks almost year-round.
I have seen a lot of sharks while diving at La Jolla, but never while surfing there...and not a single shark even gave us a second look...in fact a territorial bull seal or protective bull dolphin is more likely to run you off than a shark sighting.
And try to bring in a nice tuna or yellowtail while deep sea trolling in S.D. without having a barracuda or seal take your catch! LOL! Never even heard of a shark doing that.
Once while we were putting a submarine into a floating dry-dock at Point Loma...we found a weird type of bottom-feeding shark trapped in the water as we were pumping down...we figured it was attracted by the operting boat's electro-magnetic fields. We quickly set up a makeshift tank and called Scripps Institute of Oceanography...it was so beautiful, plus as it turns out it was rare. I think it ended up at Sea World, San Diego in the basking pond after Scripps studied it.
Australia and South Africa both have lots of big whites...but surfers and divers are rarely hit...and when they are it is simply a case of mistaken identity...and I know of more surfers/divers world-wide who have survived attacks than died. Those that died simply bled out before they could be treated...they weren't eaten.
So I agree with Patty...be smart about your reporting. Surfers practially live in the water...and divers and spear fishermen are right down on the reefs where sharks eat and live...if they don't get hit very often, then your odds as an occasional water-going tourist are astronomically small.
As we encroach further and further, and in ever-increasing numbers, into wild habitat...there are going to be more incidents...whether it is bears, mountain lions or sharks.
So be a smart and informed water-goer...don't go in if you have a open cut, are on your period, or if the guards/locals advise against it. If you are spearfishing...know the area...and get to the boat quickly with your catch.
You are more likely to step on a stone fish or urchin, get cut by coral, or get stung by a ray or jelly or man-o-war...than you are to ever even see a shark. (I have done all of them except the stonefish, which can be fatal.)
Every year over 100 times more people drown in the ocean than get hit by sharks...maybe I should do a top ten drowning beaches! LOL
The nuts who say don't kill the beautiful sharks need thearpy !!!! The ecosystem will not collapse without them !! That is total BULL !!!
Sharks are beautiful creatures and they may become indangered if we keep on killing them just because of one shark attack! I'm not saying that I'm fine with people getting severly injured or killed by sharks but they are just mistaking you for fish. If you start bleeding in the water chances are a shark will come around. Or if you are splashing a lot. But it's really not their fault for attacking people that from under the water look like seals. I love sharks and I would hate to see those beautiful creatures go.
Rent a condo at ALA. Gulf Shores---rent one about four or five stories up with the balcony facing the Gulf---go out on the balcony with your morning coffee at daybreak and watch the size and number of sharks within thirty feet of the beach and think about how much money you have wasted when your wife asks you "what are those big shadows in the water down there?"
sharks have been around since prestoric Days and the water is there Home So leave them alone.Remember when you go swimming that you are in there place of living not yours.swim at your own risk. If your bitten then oh well and also shark attacks are a mistake in identity for seals or wonded fish.they should be protected like crocs and aligators.
"get out of the water- can't you hear the music?" jokes about "jaws" aside, you are the visitors. sharks are the price of admission.
i swim at newsymyrna beach alll the time!
Life is funny.I always tell people that great whites are in the waters of virginia beach, which is true.I already knew about australia and south africa. In south africa, they actually jump out the water to catch it's prey.If the world is 3/4 water and every year the land get smaller, wonder what other creatures are in the water we don't know about?Especially deep sea creatures that can handle extreme amounts of pressure.Sharks along with snakes need to be respected.so beware of mother nature.......
Sharks scare me. But so does the spelling ability of some Americans. Are schools teaching anything? Wow--the spelling in these messages!
Come to Minnesota. io,ooo lakes and no sharks or jellyfish. Lots of pristine water and sand beaches. Sure its only 5 months of the year but you can ice fish in complete comfort in the winter.
overestimated-- they are magnificent creatures-very ancient persecuted for their fins to make soup for some gluttons. Gluttony is one of the seven deadly sins
i'm glad you told us the top ten i have been to alot of beaches that are most likley to have alot of sharks
stacy: you are crazy! lol
This is purely retarded, this is sensationalist journalism, most sharks show no aggressivness towards humans.
u should be more worried about riptide at the beach rather than sharks
u also have a higher chance of dieing from a coconut hitting you in the head rather than being attacked by a shark.
I completely agree with Patricia's view that this is "sensationalist journalism" that really spreads more fear ( FEAR + IGNORANCE = HATE ) than it does teach the truth about these beautiful creatures.
They have existed on this earth for millions of years for a reason. In truth, we have slaughtered so many of these animals, that we have brought many species of sharks nearly to extinction. We have" ATTACKED" and killed thousands more of them, than they have us! They are at the top of the food chain ( as any apex predator is ) in order to keep this world's fragile ecosystem in balance. EVERY living species (no matter how large or how small) exists to keep our EARTH finely tuned, whether it lives in the sea, or on land. P.S. much thanks to Scorpio69er for the stats. from the International Shark Attack File.

I too had a fear of sharks, then I was stationed at Johnston Island in the pacific, met a man from scripts institue, went out and dove with grey reef sharks, most exciting experience of my life, found that there is no need to fear sharks, but respect them/. Leave the hype to Peter Benchley.
This is a good rumor for those of us in NSB as it keeps traffic down on our beautiful beach. Fortunately the sharks in the area are usually very small and are found mostly in the inlet area on the far north end near Ponce Inlet where the waves break the best for surfing two to three miles from our central beaches. Bites are annoying- like poison ivy, they are not fatal, but require treatment. The sharks get annoyed too as they are not interested in this human flesh. It's a waste of time to bite us. Any way, it's an honor to be put in the class of beaches that have Great Whites. Keep the rumor alive.
I say do away with em all! Snakes included!
Just because sharks don't attack in an area or aren't seen there, doesn't mean that they don't exist. Sharks are a lot smarter than most people think.
thats scary!
If you go to the Great Lakes you get the great feeling of the ocean without the sharks, jellyfish, and saltwater. Im surprised they don't get more recognition. You can also visit the cute towns or larger cities in Michigan and Wisconsin.
sharks are great and all. but i'm scared to death of things that can eat me. not so much on land but in water were helpless, we humans can not swim faster then anything in the water nothing. we have no chance there. sure theres the sayin if u see a shark and its goin to eat u hit its nose. i'm not sure if that works and i'm not willin to test the theroy.
Sharks scare the crap out of me.I know the only reason they mean attack is if provaked or you go in there territory but I'm am still terrifited of them.I cant stand going in the water not knowing whats in there with me.
this is all good advice i would enter a beach even with a shark there cuz i now know what not to do and what to do if i see one..killing sharks not a very good idea unless ur a professional fisherman...as for families having little kids in the water at the beach is good but i would never let them go far away from the beach unless i know they are safe or atleast have someone u trust to go with them..i think its a good idea if people did know where those dang jelly fish were heck i would love to know where those jelly fish are lol...but not all sharks are bad but i would beware the ones that are tiger sharks and the ones that have a pointy snout!!! signing off here Kristina
well i lived in texas and my Friends and i went to the beach and my friend Jake was killed by a tiger shark and people say tiger sharks dont attack people.....!!!!!! he wasn't even in water 4 ft and it just took him by the leg and we all screamed and they never found him tho.....
so dont go to beaches in texas there covered in sharks
yeah. humans for land and Sharks are kings of the ocean. so when going swimming be very careful. want to explore the depths of the ocean do that in a shark cage, go in a submarine. I believe sharks are increasing like crazy, so beware. killing any living thing is wrong period. I also read in a florida article about HUMAN MEDICATION ENDING UP IN SHARKS!!! what do you think that means. I believe these drugs that are getting into these sharks, especially bull sharks being that they strive in fresh water might become more aggressive, energized and restless, but that's just my thought of the affects on young bull sharks...I could be wrong. but think about it what does drugs do to us beings and what would it do to an animal?. so i think these human meddications should be disposed of properly by buring the left over medicine and what not into a container under the earth instead of into the rivers, oceans, water ways etc.
i agree. sharks are one of my favorite animals. ive seen pictures of people killing sharks for money and it makes me mad as hell.
ya for u
this is kewl
Hey Lizzie--I too encountered a shark in Turks & Caicos. He was small and had a parrot fish companion which was cute. But in Trunk's Bay (St. John's) I was bumped twice not far from shore by a 6 footer! It is a great story to tell now since I wasn't attacked but...YIKES!!!
i'm no biologist or animal rights activist but i honestly get a little ill when i see someone who instantly jumps to the defense of these creatures. seems some people are quick to keep them from being maligned but let's face the truth. these creatures are killers. if they mistake you for a seal, guess what? they may STILL try to eat you. this doesn't mean i don't respect them(i'd give them a wide berth), but please, don't act like these creatures are misjudged and innocent victims of hollywood dramas. they're killers, the oldest and most unchanged of its kind(next to the alligator/crocodile).
The sharks will be become extinct....So you will be fine.
This is stupid. List the most bear "infested" (infested? really? how about frequented?) woods. The most lightning infested plains. Etc. Etc. That way people will be scared of everything and never go anywhere.
I'll recommend your website for laughs, not to any serious traveler.
I believe it is quite helpful that you have mentioned where and where not to swim, yet these "attacks" are so rare. There is no need to frighten our world about this issue. Sharks are living things like all beings on earth, we are in there element, the water is their home. They should not have to leave because we choose to invade their waters. On the occasion that an attack does occur, it is but only a shark who is starving for some prey. They need to eat, just like the millions of obese Americans. I believe the sharks are not our problem, but we are theirs.
thanks hopefully ill remember that when i turn 20 something and decide to start travleing
I agree that sharks are a important part of our ecosystem and should not be killed. They are a sight to see!
We do have the right to enjoy are beaches with out being threatened by a shark. So on some of these beaches that have nets why dont we place small electrical systems on these nets to keep the sharks away from the nets or an air curtain.
good thing southern california donsnt have any sharks cause i live down there
Now I know where to take my wife for a romantic swim...thanks for the tip!
i love the ocean but i am scared to get in the water, but otherwise i really do want to learn how to surf.my brother has won a fishing turnament before but i dont really fish,i do love going out in my dads boat.anyway i live in south carolina and i am glad i dont live in flordia because it is to hot and there is a lot of sharks.
i live in hawaii
that good to know
omg i go kayaking in the long island sound almost every summer are there really great whites there please tell me
WWCHD
what would the crocodile hunter do?
Don't be so stupid people! This is not soooooo important. Geez just don't go out deep and look!
Its not like their are tons of sharks just WAITING to kill you. The water is their home so if you see one calmy get out. My mom works at a Ocean Research thing and I swam with hamerheads...
No promblem! Just stay calm!
stacie when your friend was dragged off by a tiger shark and he disappeared. were you all in the water? were you or any of the other girls in the water in or near a menstration period? allot of attacks on land are related to this scent.
As long as you don't act stupid a shark won't just come up and try to kill you. There are reasons why sharks attack people.
I know sharks is Gods creation but they were harmful in there nature. They eat humans if they want to!I have seen a lot of documentary about that.Only thing i know is that when God created them all beast, sea creature, creeping animals are not harmful,if you read the bible(KJV).when sin entered into the world they change.Sin entered into the world by Adam and Eve.That they became harmful, time comes that they will not be like that anymore, when Jesus will come again..and made a new earth!!!!!!
IM looking up sharks on google and found this page!
Sharks are fish. Fish are good to eat. Have a shark steak. YUM! They do not taste "fishy", but have a good meaty flavor. Best to grill them.
the waters aren't infested with man -eaters, the "sharks" live and breath in the waters that we invade. Most of the time the sharks won't hurt you if you don't hurt them or invade their space. They are similar to humans, when people get to close to eachother we get cranky, and the only way sharks warn people is by warning them with theur bite. And if people keep killing sharks they will finally go extinct and the number of fish will increase and over populate our oceans. Sometimes people just need to think things clearly.
Sharks are the bomb. Why be scared of something that has been here millions of years before humans. I think it's bad ass and screw some pencil pusher for forbes magazine trying to scare everybody to staying on the sand. Fine with me, more waves for us....god bless the shark and the humans that swim amongst it...
im just gonna stay neutral (:
Sharks may not be vicious all the time, but they are dangerous to humans, and a lot of times, when a person gets attacked by an animal, it is provoked somehow (territory, hunger, sickness). By the way, shark meat tastes good!
K Nicole wrote "Just because sharks don't attack in an area or aren't seen there, doesn't mean that they don't exist. Sharks are a lot smarter than most people think."
(S)he was close - "[...] Sharks are a lot smarter than most people."
As evident in many comments here, humans are rebelling against evolution and appear to be losing intelligence as a whole. 10 years ago, someone who demonstrated a gross lack of mastery over their native language would be lucky to find a job licking envelopes. Today, it seems about 4 in 10 internet 'surfers' possess the grammatical and spelling skills of your average kindergarten pupil. Please, go back to school and pay attention... or at least smile when you ask if I would like fries with my order.
wow, Bolinas huh? I have been surfing Bolinas for 15 years with my pops, he never told me that....thanks dad! Oh well, I have never had a close encounter, besides, sharks are naturally peaceful, they only bite when you touch their private parts...hahaaha
ngerous Shark Beaches...I think that this is a great lead in to discussions about beach diego hotel ocean san, what do you think about this angle?
I am a 4th generation Floridian. Have fished our waters with my dad for many years. Have heard the stories of large sharks actually attacking fishing boats off Riveria Beach in the 50's. Many people want to down-play sharks and how dangerous they are. I now surf fish almost every day. I see many sharks almost daily. Many times, when I have a fish on my line, the sharks will eat the fish before I can get it to the beach. In all my years in Florida, I have never seen more sharks in the waters than there are now. The person, Kelly who wrote on Sept. 9th. is dreaming. If she has never seen any sharks in the Brevard county area, she needs to get her eyes examined, or she does not know what to look for. The many lifeguards at public beaches want to say there is no problem. Chances are, that guy moved here from Kansas, and grew up in the middle of a cornfield. Believe me when I tell you, talk with a local person who knows the waters. I never swim in these waters. A word to the wise.
Groovy. Gives me some new ideas of places to go scuba diving with sharks. WOOHOO!!!
Are there many attacks in Ocean City MD?
I am not to scared of sharks, but I know that you need to respect them and not go to deep..which I have a tendacy to do..But on the times when I feel something brush against my leg, then I am out of the ocean faster then you can yell shark! xD I think the closest I ever got to a shark was at the aquarium..Those things freaked the heck out of me!
yeah i like how a lot of you think that just because sharks do attack SOMETIMES that we should just kill them well its not right i mean look at humans we kill just about every animal they really dont mean to attack humans the mistake us for there prey most sharks have poor eye sight and go off of smell. and anyways humans are supposed to live on land so we are going in there territory when we swim so if u dont like it stay out it doesnt give us a reason to kill them cuz every second 3 sharks are killed jus for fins or because of people like you who get stupid and scared so you go out in kill well there only trying to survive and so are we so stop all the complaining just shut up
Sharks are nothing to be afraid of. For the hundreds of thousands of people that swim in the oceans every single day shark attacks are pretty minimal. It's just that being attacked by a shark is scary. Swimming on top of the water, not being able to see what's below you. The media picks up on this because it is a personal to everyone. It brings out a fear that we are not used to having. Fear of a predator.
Sharks mainly mouth people out of curiousity. When you feed goldfish, you'll see them pick up rocks and spit them out. Same concept. They can'y feel what something is food or a rock without their mouths. Problem is that sharks have teeth, and they ause a lot of damage.
And if you don't want to be mistaken for food, don't surf/swim where there is prey. If there is a large seal, sea lion population near your beach odds are their are going to be great white sharks because that is their source of food. Common sense. Other sharks that are not as big are probably curious, but their are those occasions. happy swimming
oh and don't act like a struggling fish/ injured. Apex preadtors always go after the weak and sick. like it says above be calm
People go into the ocean and yell "shark!!!".
That's where they live a**hole!!!!
Sharks and I have an agreement. I don't go to their house, they don't come to my house. It's that simple.
THE DAY THEY CATCH OR SEE A GREAT WHITE IN LONG SLAND SOUND, WE ARE IN FOR BIG TROUBLE. THE FISH IN QUESTION WAS CAUGHT 80 MILE OFF MONTAUK POINT BY CAPTAIN MUNDUS. IN THE ATLANTIC OCEAN.
fact of life sharks are in every ocean and at every beach they will go where there food is abundent
To me, I think one of these beaches would be a great place to take the ex wife or present wife.
Just kidding !!
All sharks needs to be wiped out.We dont need sharks for our ecosystem. There are many other fishes in the sea that will help the ecosystem.
I think God forgot to wipe out sharks and alligators when God wiped out the dinasours.
I cant wait for sharks to go exinct so I can enjoy the beaches even more! Keep on shark fishing!
I surf at Bolinas CA And Stinson CA all the time their neighbors ("bo bo" or "bo-stin") all the time but its not the sharks you gotta worry about, They have a saying in Bolinas because its such a small town, you don't lose your girlfriend you just lose your turn...
Dont you people realize what would happen to the ocean's eco system if all sharks were killed just because you are all scared of them.
Give me a break you are all probably the same people that thinka ll pitbulls are dangerous dogs.
Get over it and grow up! read jenn'ys response from Sept. 20th 2007 at 5:08pm.
Dont you people realize what would happen to the ocean's eco system if all sharks were killed just because you are all scared of this beautiful creature? Come on grow up and get over it.
You are probably the same people that think all pitbulls are dangerous dogs. It's only the stupid people behind the dog that are dangerous.
DON'T BLAME THE BREED!!!!!!!!!!
OR THE SPECIES FOR THAT FACT!!!
Im all for tourists filling the oceans with swimmers. I say never let a shark go hungry.
Ever wonder why people get duped into having unfounded fears about things like shark attacks, but do things every day that are more likely to get them killed?
How about you? Ever talked on the cell phone, read a map/directions, or ate food while driving?
I am a night diver and go out frequently for lobster and fish. Ive seen plenty of sharks hunting at night and never been attacked or threatend. So leave the sharks alone. They are neccessary for the ocean to survive.
(Ive never seen a cow gather its friends to hunt a human every time we eat a hamburger)..JJ Scott
FYI,
First, most shark attacks happen in 5 feet of water or less when it comes to human/shark encounters. So no more of this "dont swim far from shore or in water over your head."
Second, to escape a shark attack, always carry a small knife with you. Not to attack the shark mind you, but to stick the person closest to you so you can swim away.
To the person who said, "that you need 2 kill them sharks"..you're an idiot. Sharks are extremely important, without them, the oceans would crash. That's why there is so much concern about them. Some species have declined by as much as 98% in some areas, and ecological problems are starting to surface. In fact, you have a greater chance of being struck by lightening, twice. So, think before you speak, and that's not geared towards one person. Why do we have to kill them, after all, WE are going into THEIR WORLD.
Rosali, yes there are Great Whites in that area.
I am more worried about the spelling abilities of people who have replied to the article than I am about encountering a shark.
Don't be stupid: the ocean is not a swimming pool. There are more drownings at the beach than shark attacks. Want your kids to go swimming? Get them a pool in your yard.
I remember snorkeling in the channel that leads to the boat dock pond in Cape Breton when I was a kid and seeing sharks. Every year the tuna fisheman catch sharks in the area. The number of cathces there have been steadily growing over the last 20 yrs. I'd be interested to know of the population of sharks in that area, especially great whites, as I've seen a 690lb shark caught there. I think sharks are everywhere it just depends on what they're feeding on that makes us notice them.
I have been diving for over 20 years. I have been in the water in california, hawaii, florida, and mexico with some huge sharks around me. I have never been attacked. They are awesome animals. I was fearful in being so close to them because of their awesome presence and size, and do not recomend swimmming with them. I also have to admire their poise and grace, and will never forget the experiences. When in the ocean we are in their world. It is an utterly beautiful world at that.
"sharks are like dogs... they only bite when you touch their privat parts..."
