Expensive Cancun to Lose College Spring Breakers

Cancun ResortI recently found a USA Today article (via Hotel Chatter) about how Cancun may be losing some of its notorious college Spring Break crowds this year. Cancun resorts have subtly shifted to targeting more upscale travelers after they made millions of dollars worth of upgrades after 2005’s hurricane wilma.

After the hurricane devastation, many of Cancun’s resorts decided they might as well upgrade big to try and capture the lucrative luxury travel market. Since a lot of the hotels and resorts did this, the “dirt cheap Cancun spring break hotel” is harder to find.

In addition to more expensive Cancun hotels, the new Passport requirement going into effect this year is another cost ($97) college spring breakers may not be too fond of incurring.

I think these two new costs will deter a handful of college spring breakers, but nothing substantial. I think Cancun will always hold the title of “#1 Spring Break Destination” in the eyes of spring breakers, even if they do get a little more expensive. If MTV is still going there for spring break, Cancun will stay on top.
